Well duh!

Here's some excellent advice:

If what you're doing isn't working, stop doing it and do something different. And if that works do more of it.

On the other hand, there's the equally useful, "If something is painful to do, try doing it more often."

The simple example here is cleaning the kitchen: cleaning as you go is much easier than doing the dishes once a year. But if you are a once-a-year dish doer, you'll grumble at people who suggest doing it more often, telling them that doing it once a year is awful enough; there's no way you'd want to double that!
